Why is the Sky Blue

Why is the sky blue, you ask? Well little one, I'll tell you. But you have to promise to remember this story, because it is an important one. It's an old, sad story. One, that one day you'll be very happy to tell your little ones, when they ask you the same important question. Hmm, why is the sky blue indeed. It starts with the elements, you know them all, fire, earth and such. But this story is about two elements in particular.

One of these elements is air. Now it wasn't always so, but now, air's domain is all around us, the sky. His dwelling, is our whispers, our sighs. He fills the sails, and gives us flight. He gives us life's breath, which even the creatures underwater need. He's the hunters weapon, prey's warning. He is a trickster in the sand. He's the eagle's best friend, and a lover's most passionate sigh. He is cold, harsh, biting, fierce and true. He is soft, encompassing and uplifting. He tears down mountains to get his job done, and once he's decided on his direction, nothing could make him stray off his path. His destruction is horrid for he was part of that fabled, long past, beautiful chaos of our world. His cherished love, his friend, his partner in eternity, was water.

The other element is water. Power and raw emotion. Ever changing, formless and unstoppable, fickle. Her place is our happy and distraught tears; the oceans and seas. She is found where life flourishes. In our blood, coursing through every heart. The morning dew, and the sunset mist. She helps us grow all grow, whether by gentle touch or ravishing lash. She aids the hunter journey, and preys camouflage. She can lengthen any course with her absence, and can ease droughts with but a touch. Green life caresses her with appreciation, and sand parts and rocks move but for a mere whim at her discretion. She's the splash that washes a child's face, and the sweat between two lovers. Her jealous love has sunk the most sea worthy vessels, and her rage sprayed the world with hope. For her passion is as strong as her will to give life. As she furiously takes on her charge, as she was made for the world to be. She adored wind, with a love only the lord of the elements could describe.

Now, long, very long ago, the world wasn't what it is like today. Though it was probably round, it was almost shapeless and didn't make much sense at all. In all this chaos, there was untamed, dangerous beauty. Everything you could see was a splendor of magnificent visions, colors and movements. This beautiful chaos, was the love and pure wants of all the elements, running free, wild and unchecked. All the elements were always intertwined, creating things the mind could never imagine, in mere moments, only to destroy them the very next moment to create something else. This type of world, nothing could or would have survived in. The lord of the elements sought more, and thus decided that he wanted the elements to create and mold. So he parted the elements, against all their strongest wishes and desires, picking each to do a specific task on his world. A world where new creatures could be together and love freely, even though the elements were never to be with one another as they once were.

You already know where Air and Water were sent to be for the rest of the Lord's demand. Their company divided timelessly, the elements do mold and create the most flourishing of environments, but as you know, they can be jealously unforgiving and deadly. This is because of their anger and hurt and longing to be together once again. Air and Wind's courting since has been a special and slow one, barely ever getting to even touch one another. Have you ever wondered why when your skin is moist and a soft breeze blows by, you feel so excited and cheered up? The rush of electricity and just overall pleasant feeling coursing through your body? That is what a tiny portion of Air and Wind's love is like. That multiplied by the thousands can't compare to what they lost when they were torn apart. In our world we only see Snow, flurries, hail.. rain... rainbows and iced water tops, these are all the remnants of but mere moments of Wind and Air's rare moments when they get to touch. Mere seconds to them, hours for us. Water's rage that comes from longing so, is a sailors bane, oceanic storms and tempests the eye beholding them could still claim disbelief. Air, mighty air's passionate wants once greet with Wind's and in that rare moment one can only claim their forceful love making is what we perceive to be a hurricane, and nothing more. All these rare things we take for granted, they cherish as if their last. They is why the destruction can be so fierce. That is why, it hurts so much to part, because it is unnatural, to away from your partners embrace; This they two, know best of all.

Here we lay, listening to the winds passing cries and whispering sighs, as if carrying a hundred lovers' whispered poems. Here our rain, hits us, and even on the hottest of days, the coolness completes us, and fills us with hope. Here I tell you, to always remember, that those rare moments are nothing to us but time. To the elements, they are so much more. Here's why the the ocean waves, and the seas crash. To show dearest wind, how she longs for his touch, and misses how he moved her with his strength. Water's promise to air, to forever let their distance fuel her rage and jealousy and her undying want of him. Here is why the sky is blue, as Air reflects back to Water everything he holds dear about her, Her dark blue he reflects back in the brightest hue only knowing her cheer and enjoyment, and everything he remembers about her form and grace, her beauty and her colorful love; His promise, to reach and touch her every given chance, and remind each other of a time, that is no more, but a time that hasn't stopped their love, anywhere on this planet. That, my dear, is why to us, the sky is blue.
